Atypical Pneumonias Flashcards

1
Q

Atypical Pneumonia

S/S

A

Fever, Dry cough, interstitial pattern of fibronodular infiltrates, less severe than typical pneumonia

Sputum if present is white

Walking pneumonia - on X-ray
Less likely to have pleuritic pain or effusion

Q

Pertussis - VF

A

Adherence by fimbriae. filamentous hemagglutinin, pertactin
Secreted exotoxin - pertussis toxin - elevated intracellular cAMP by ADP-ribosylation of a G protein which acitvated adenyl cyclase

tracheal cytotoxin

Q

Pertussis - pathogenesis

A

Tracheitis and bronchitis with accumulation of mucus, inflammatory cells, bacteria and dead epithelial cells
Intense coughing against closed vocal cords (valsalva maneuver) attempts to expel mucus

Leukocytosis
infection rarely extends to lung to cause pneumonia or otitis media- never cause bacteremia
