Atypical Cervical HVLA Flashcards
upper respiratory infections
normally viral
-can lead to secondary bacterial
visceral afferent - upper thoracic segments - increased tone head, neck, lungs
goal of OMT - improve arterial supply, improve venous and lymph draining, reduce muscle spasm, reduce discomfort, balance autonomic reflex disturbances, improve immune function
venous drainage from head
internal jugular veins
-jugular foramen
-associated with OA and AA areas
treating upper thoracic and rib
make cervical spine and cranial mechanism easier to treat
OA diagnosis
motion of occiput on atlas
AA diagnosis
motion of atlas on axis
muscle energy modification for HVLA of OA and AA
after engaging barrier - instruct patient to turn head to the side of rotation and do MET
motion of OA
flexion and extension
sidebending and rotation opposite directions
diagnosis of OA
middle finger posterior to occipital condyles
index fingers on articular pillars of C1
motion of AA
major - rotation
diagnosis of AA
middle fingers over articular pillars of atlas
index fingers over articular pillars of axis
OA stuck open
rotated to that side
ex/ right OA stuck open is rotated right sidebent left
OA and AA final corrective force for HVLA
rotational thrust with 2nd MCP
typical cervical final corrective force for HVLA
A/P and S/I thrust from 2nd MCP
