Attribution Attitudes and Actions Flashcards
Who are Social Psychologist
They focus on a person and study the personal traits and dynamics that explain why different people may act differently in a given situation
What is Attribution Theory
a theory that supposes that one attempts to understand the behavior of others by attributing feelings, beliefs, and intentions to them.
What is the Fundamental Attribution Error
We overestimate the influence of personality and underestimate the influence of situations
What cultures do not make the fundamental attribution error as much
East Asian Cultures
What is Self Serving Bias
our readiness to perceive ourselves favorably
What are Attitudes
are feelings, often influenced by our beliefs, that predispose our reactions to objects, people, and events.
What is Peripheral Route Persuasion
doesn’t engage systematic thinking, but does produce fast results as people respond to incidental cues (such as endorsements by respected people) and make snap judgments
What is Central Route Persuasion
offers evidence and arguments that aim to trigger favorable thoughts.
What is the door in the face phenomenon
The persuader attempts to convince the respondent to comply by making a large request that the respondent will most likely turn down, much like a metaphorical slamming of a door in the persuader’s face.
What is the Foot in the Door Phenomenon
the tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later with a larger request.
What is Role
a set of expectations (norms) about a social position, defining how those in the position ought to behave.
What is Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment
a social psychology study in which college students became prisoners or guards in a simulated prison environment
What is the Festinger’s Cognitive Dissonance Theory
the theory that we act to reduce the discomfort (dissonance) we feel when two of our thoughts (cognitions) are inconsistent.
What is Cognitive Dissonance
cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information
What is Diffusion of Responsibility
Tendency of people to feel less responsibility for accomplishing a task when the task is shared by members of a group.
