Describe what an attitude is.
Ideas charged with emotion which pre-dispose a class of actions to a particular social situation. One that can be heavily influenced by types of attitude objects, they tend to be specific rather than global.
State the 4 types of attitude objects.
People. Objects. Events. Behavior to which we have an attitude.
How are attitudes formed?
By associating with others and picking up their opinions and values, also known as socialisation. We will learn from significant others like our friends, family, or role models.
What is the cognitive component of attitude?
Aspects of attitude will reflect your beliefs, knowledge and thoughts.
What is the affective component of the triadic model?
This component involves our feelings towards, and our emotional responses to, an object.
The 3rd component of the triadic model is the behavioural component. What is meant by that?
Our intended, or actual, behaviour towards an attitude object.
Describe the two concepts used to change an attitude.
Cognitive dissonance: a coach will create conflict between the different components of attitude which forces a change. As a significant other puts pressure on at least one of the components, it creates unease in the performer and they become motivated to change their existing attitude.
Persuasive communication: not as effective as cognitive dissonance. A coach may talk the performer into changing their attitude. It is most effective to use after a defeat as the performer is likely to realise the need for change.
State what the 6 factors affecting attitude formation.
Socialisation: observing a positive attitude in others.
Conditioning: significant others reinforcing that a positive attitude is desirable.
Past experiences: previous positive or negative experiences about an object/idea/belief.
Familiarity: repeated exposure to the same idea/object.
Availability of role models: more male role models in sport so ensures more positive attitudes are formed.
Awareness/publicity of sport: more publicised and encouraged a sport is, the more likely it will influence positive attitudes to be formed.
