Attention Flashcards
what are the four types of cognitive resourse allocation?
- filtering sensory perceptual input
- prioritizing of cognitive processing
- directing cognitive attention
- maintaining cognitive vigilance
describe vigilance in orienting systems
there has to be some cognitive vigilance in cognitive resource allocation, so that we can disengage, shift and engage new stimuli.
what is neglect ?
a disorder with damage to the right parietal brain areas that causes lack of awareness to objects presented at the left side of space.
why do people have neglect ?
difficulty focusing attention on the left side of space (the attention that flags them to orientate to the left visual field)
what does neglect show us?
- right hemisphere lateralization for visual spatial attention
evidence for neglect
Marshall and Halligan (1988)
what is attention?
refers to the systems involved in the selection and prioritisation of information
what is extinction
a disorder of visual attentionin which stimulus presenteed at the opposite side of brian damage is not detected when another stimulus is presented to the side of the brian damage.
what are the limitations on the research on extinction and neglect?
precise symptoms and region of brain damage vaies across patients
the relationship between neglect and extinction remains unclear.
what is inattentional blindness?
failure to detect an unexpected object appearing in the visual environment.
who did studies on inattentional blindness?
Mark and rock, 1998
why do we have inattentional blindness
Attentional sets reducing of task-irrelevant stimuli not included within a set.
