Attending Skills Flashcards
This skill involves rephrasing the content portion of a client’s communication. This statement answers the question, “What did the client say?”
Paraphrasing verbal content
In some counselling contexts, there are moments when the “most appropriate” response from the counsellor is _______ – a moment of listening and waiting and being present with the client while the client processes her or his current experience. [Note: this is different from the counsellor being inactive or ‘scrambling’ for a response (and thus silent).]
Silence (deliberate)
This skill involves using an open, relaxed posture, and non-verbal cues that convey the impression that the counsellor is concerned about, cares about, or is attempting to understand what the client is saying.
