enduring socio-emotional relationships between infants and their caregivers
secure attachments
relationship in which infants have come to trust and depend on their mothers; i.e: child can be consoled when mom is present
secure attachments leads to:
healthier relationship, more balanced lives, and the individuals ability to balance emotional states
“strange situation”
research study; gave researchers a valid measuring tool for attachment
insecure attachments
avoidant attachment
(unattached) baby turns away from mother when reunited following a brief separation; avoid attachment of any kind, don’t care if mom is present or leaves
resistant attachment
(overly attached) child resists being consoled, punish parent for leaving
disorganized (disoriented)
child is in a state of confusion, do not know what’s going on till reunited with parent
Insecure attachment can lead to:
- unhealthy
-unbalance relationships
-inability to bond with others emotionally
-lower frustration tolerance
-inability to trust others
