Q

Outline Harlow’s study into attachment? (6-8marks)

A

AO1: Harlow created 2 wire monkeys with same head, one had cloth wrapped around it. 8 infant rhesus monkeys were raised in isolation cages for 3 months. in 4/8 cages wire monkey held feeding bottle and in others cloth monkey did. Results: No matter about food provision, he found monkeys from both groups spent most time w/ cloth monkey and if it didnt have food they only went over to the one with food to feed. He also created frightening situation w/ a robot and they always went to cloth mum for comfort. Continued: He continued to study them and they developed socially and sexually abnormally . He found a critical period - if they spent some time w/ other monkeys they would recover but not fully.

Q

Give 3 evaluation points for Harlows study into attachment

A

EVALUTATION:

1) Ethical issues - immoral and ruined monkeys future lives
2) Not generalisable (monkeys dont act same)
3) FACE of surrogate mother is the same so it could be that.
