Attachment Flashcards
What is classical conditioning?
Classical conditioning involves learning to merge a response an infant gives from one stimuli to another stimuli.
For example “food” . Infants see food as unconditioned stimuli because being fed naturally gives us pleasure. The caregiver is seen to be a neutral stimuli because it gives a neutral response. As the caregiver starts to feed the infant over a course of time the infant starts to associate the caregiver with food. The end result is that the caregiver becomes a conditioned response as it now associates the food with them
What is operant conditioning?
it is established that behaviour is reinforced. To encourage a behaviour either something has to be removed or rewarded which is where negative and positive reinforcement is placed
-positive reinforcement is Adding something desirable or pleasant to encourage a behavior.
- negative reinforcement is Removing something unpleasant or aversive to encourage a behavior.
What are the weaknesses to the Learning theory of attachment?
- The study of schaffer and emerson shows that being fed is not the primary way of forming an attachment. This was proven as there was a stronger attachment with the mother (by infant) despite being fed by other carers
- Animal studies prove that being fed is not the primary way of forming an attachment because Lorenze’s geese followed the first moving object and Harlows monkey followed comfort ( cotton monkey surragate mother)
-Factors to form an Attachment such as interactional synchrony and reciprocity by isabella et el were not taken into place. If sophisticated ideas like these would not be necessary if the primary way of attachment is being fed.
Define imprinting
importing is the idea that animals form a strong bond and attachment to the first moving object they see.
