Atropine Flashcards
Atropine Uses
C7 - Dysrhythmias - Bradycardia
DT7 - Organophosphates
DT5 - Nerve Agent Poisoning
Atropine type
Anticholinergic
Atropine contraindications
Nil for NSWAS
Atropine adverse effects 8
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Tachycardia
Nausea & vomiting
Hyperthermia
Dysrhythmia
Urinary retention
Agitation, delirium, hallucinations, seizure and coma may occur in high doses
Atropine action
Antagonises the parasympathetic effects of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors resulting in:
1 increase heart rate via increasing intrinsic rate of the SA node and conduction through the AV node
2 reducing smooth muscle contraction resulting in pupillary dilation, reduced GI motility and reduced bladder tone
3 blocks exocrine gland activity causing decreased salivary, bronchial, gastric and sweat secretions
Atropine
Route. Onset Peak Duration
IM
IV
Route. Onset Peak Duration
IM dependent on perfusion
IV <2min. <5min. 2-6hrs
Atropine special notes
As two concentrations are available: Read the label carefully and cross check prior to administration
IM atropine should only be used where IV access is not available
Paediatric bolus dose for Bradycardia may exceed the bolus dose for patients ≥16 years of age
