Atropine Flashcards
What is Atropine used to treat?
Muscarinic antagonist. Used to treat bradycardia and for ophthalmic applications.
Example sentence: Atropine is commonly used to dilate the pupil during eye examinations.
What are the actions of Atropine?
1 pupil dilation, cycloplegia
Bronchodilation, decreases secretions
+ decreases acid secretion
+ decreases motility
+ decreases urgency in cystitis
1 increases body temperature (due to t sweating); t HR;
dry mouth; dry, flushed skin; cycloplegia;
constipation; disorientation
Example sentence: Atropine can cause pupil dilation and dry mouth as adverse effects.
What are some adverse effects of Atropine?
body temperature (due to t sweating); † HR; dry mouth; dry, flushed skin; cycloplegia; constipation; disorientation
Can cause acute angle-closure glaucoma in older adults (due to mydriasis), urinary retention in men with prostatic hyperplasia, and hyperthermia in infants
Example sentence: Atropine can cause dry mouth, increased body temperature, and constipation as adverse effects.
What are some notes about Atropine?
Blocks muscarinic effects (DUMBBELSS) of anticholinesterases, but not the nicotinic effects
Adverse effects: Hot as a hare, Fast as a fiddle, Dry as a bone, Red as a beet, Blind as a bat, Mad as a hatter, Full as a flask
Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors in the salivary glands, producing dryness of the mouth (xerostomia). Sweat and lacrimal glands are similarly affected. [Note: Inhibition of secretions of sweat glands can cause elevated body temperature, which can be dangerous in children and the elderly
Example sentence: Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors and can cause dryness of the mouth.
