Q

What are some notes about Atropine?

A

Blocks muscarinic effects (DUMBBELSS) of anticholinesterases, but not the nicotinic effects

Adverse effects: Hot as a hare, Fast as a fiddle, Dry as a bone, Red as a beet, Blind as a bat, Mad as a hatter, Full as a flask

Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors in the salivary glands, producing dryness of the mouth (xerostomia). Sweat and lacrimal glands are similarly affected. [Note: Inhibition of secretions of sweat glands can cause elevated body temperature, which can be dangerous in children and the elderly

Example sentence: Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors and can cause dryness of the mouth.
