Atrial Fibrilation Flashcards
What can Digoxin be used for?
To Rx HF- useful for both atrial fibrillation and HF
List generic name for cardiac Glycosides
Digoxin
What is Atrial Fibrilation?
Chaotic rhythmic activity in atria
What is the mode of action of cardiac Glycosides?
Helps slow HR by blocking the number of electrical impulses that pass through the AV node into the lower heart chambers (ventricles).
They also strengthen ventricular contractions so that the heart is able to pump more blood with each beat.
List the adverse effects of cardiac Glycosides
Sinus bradycardia Bigeminy Ectopic beats Headache Dizziness Drowsiness Visual disturbances Anorexia nausea vomiting diarrhoea
List some nursing considerations when looking after a pt on cardiac Glycosides
Check HR for FULL min prior to administration
If outside normal range (60-100) do not give meds, notify RN andDR, document on med chart and perform full set vital signs
Therapeutic levels are close to toxic levels
What do Cardiac Glycosides do?
They work to slow HR and strengthen heart contractions in people who have atrial fibrillation
