Angina Flashcards
What medications other than Nitrates can be used to treat Angina? What do these medications ultimately do?
Beta blockers ACE inhibitors Calcium channel blockers Anticoagulants Oral antiplatelets
These help to reduce BP, HR and cholesterol levels. As well as reduce strain on the heart and relax blood vessels (increasing blood grow to myocardium)
What is the drug classification of GTN?
Anti angina
List the adverse effects of GTN
Tachycardia, hypotension, dizziness and syncope, flushing, vascular headache, GI upset, restlessness
What is the action of GTN?
- Relaxes blood vessels in the body (vasodilates) which reduces the strain on the heart, making it easier to pump blood.
- Relaxed coronary arteries which increases blood flow to myocardium
List some nursing considerations for GTN
Ensure pt in bed when administering
Stay w pt at all times
Reassess pain (PQRST) and full set vital signs about 1 min post administration
If pain does not ease within 1 min they can take another tablet after 5 min
What is the preferred route of administration for GTN during angina attack
Sub lingual (releases quickest)
What are the most common medications used for angina?
Nitrates
