ATP
High energy stored compound which is our only immediate available source of energy for mucle contraction
Exothermic
Energy released in chemical reaction
Endothermic
Energy absorbed in reaction
ATPase
An enzyme whi h catalysts the breakdown of atp
Adenosine diphosphate
Coumpound formed by the removal of a phosphate bond from ATP
ATP formula
ATP->ADP*+PI+ exo energy
Enzyme= ATPase
PC formula
PC->PI+C+Endo energy
Enzyme=creatine kinase
What type of reaction is the ATP/PC system
Coupled reaction
What is taken from each formula to create energy
ATP= ADP PC= Pi + endo energy
Whats phospho creatine
High energy compound found in sarcoplasm
Sarcoplasm
Gel like substance in the muscles which surrounds the muscle fibres
How system works
When we exercise there is an increase in ADP, which is by product of breakdown of ATP
this increase detected by body and creatine kinsase activated
This enzyme creatine kinase splits phospho creatine into phosphate and creatine and this splitting energy is used to resynthesise ATP from ADP+Pi+ endo energy
Advantages
No harmful by products
PC resnthesises quickly so recovery time small
High energy
No need for O2
Disadvantages
PC store in muscles limited, if run out have to move on to next system
Only provides for 10-12 seconds
Low yield
How long after using system can we use it again
3-5 minutes
