ATP Flashcards
1
Q
Why is ATP a good source of immediate energy?
A
- bonds between 3 phosphate groups are weak and so easily broken.
- when they break, energy is released
2
Q
Give the equation of ATP to ADP
A
ATP + H20 = ADP + Pi + energy
3
Q
Why do organisms need energy?
A
- for movement (within organism and muscular contraction)
- metabolism; all reactions in organism
- active transport of ions and molecules
- maintenance, repair and division of cells and organelles
- maintenance of constant temp
- production of substances
4
Q
What are the 3 ways in which ATP is synthesised from ADP?
A
- Oxidative phosphorylation; during ETC
- Substrate-level phosphorylation; when phosphate groups are added to ADP
- Photophosphorylation; during photosynthesis
5
Q
Why is ATP a better immediate energy source than glucose?
A
- ATP stores smaller, more manageable amounts of energy
- glucose is large molecule that is broken down in a long series of reactions, ATP is synthesised quickly
