ATP Flashcards
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate.
What does ADP stand for?
Adenosine diphosphate.
Why do organisms need energy?
Metabolism, movement, active transport, maintenance repair and division, production of substances and maintenance of body temperature.
How many molecules of phosphate are in ATP, ADP and AMP?
ATP - 3
ADP - 2
AMP - 1
What are the three stages of the flow of energy through living systems?
- Light energy from the sun is converted by plants into chemical energy during photosynthesis.
- The chemical energy from photosynthesis, in the form of organic molecules, is converted into ATP during respiration in all cells.
- ATP is used by cells to perform useful work.
How does ATP store energy?
The bonds between the phosphate groups are unstable and so have a low activation energy which means they are easily broken. When they do break they release a considerable amount of energy. Usually in living cells, it is only the terminal phosphate that is removed, according to the equation:
ATP + H2O —-> ADP + Pi + Energy
