ATP Flashcards
1
Q
What is ATP?
A
adenosine triphosphate
2
Q
What is the structure of ATP?
A
- ribose sugar is attached to adenine & 3 phosphate groups
- is a nucleotide derivative (modified nucleotide)
3
Q
How is ATP broken down?
A
- ATP + water –> ADP + Pi + energy
- hydrolysis reaction using a molecule of water
- catalysed by ATP hydrolase
4
Q
What are 2 ways in which the hydrolysis of ATP is used in cells?
A
- energy requiring reactions in cells e.g. active transport & protein synthesis
- inorganic phosphate released can be used to phosphorylate other compounds to make them more reactive
5
Q
How is ATP resynthesised in cells?
A
- ADP +Pi –> ATP +water
- condensation reaction removing water molecule
- catalysed by ATP synthase
- during respiration & photosynthesis
6
Q
How do the properties of ATP make it a suitable immediate source of energy for cells?
A
- releases energy in small amounts
- is a single reaction - one bond hydrolysed for energy release
- can’t pass out of cells
