ATP Flashcards
1
Q
ATP
A
Adenosine triphosphate
- A nucleotide derivative and consists of ribose, adenine and 3 phosphate groups
- Bonds between phosphate groups are unstable, meaning there’s a low activation energy required to break them
- ATP + H2O = ADP + Pi
2
Q
ADP
A
Adenosine diphosphate
- A water molecule is used to convert ATP to ADP in a hydrolysis reaction

Q
Properties of ATP
A
- ATP is an immediate source of energy and is more desirable to use than glucose as ATP can be broken down
- ATP isn’t stored in large quantities as it can easily be reformed from ADP in seconds
- ATP is used in various ways: metabolic processes, movement, active transport, secretion and activation of molecules
