ATP Flashcards
ATP
adenosine triphosphate is a phosphorylated nucleotide formed from a nitrogen containing organic base adenine, a 5 carbon ribose sugar and a chain of three phosphate groups
why is ATP a good energy source but poor long term energy store
phosphate bonds are relatively unstable
ATP is the …
immediate energy source as the cell cannot get energy directly from glucose

ADP + Pi <——> ATP +H20
ADP = adenosine di phosphate
Pi = inorganic phosphate ion
ATP = adenosine tri phosphate

uses of ATP
energy requiring processes cells
- phosphorylation of compounds to make them more reactive such as glucose to glucose phosphate in glycosis (adding of a phosphate group)
- active transport ATP provided the energy to change shape of carrier proteins in plasma membranes moving molecules against a gradient
- metabolic processes such as synthesizing glycogen from glucose, polypeptides from amino acids
- exocytosis secretion or release of products from the cell
- movement muscle contraction and movement of cilia
