aton Technical Flashcards
what is Nominal Visual Range of Daymark?
The distance at which you can expect to see the buoy if the visibility is 10 nm.
What is the Minimum Mooring Depth?
Depth of water required to keep the buoy counterweight clear of the bottom.
what is Maximum Mooring Depth?
The maximum mooring depth for a given buoy
depends on the size of chain used. In areas with excessive wear rates, a larger diameter chainis recommended for use in the chafe section to extend the time between mooring inspections.
What is Buoy weight?
what is Flooded weight?
what is Buoy Draft?
What is the Freeboard?
Buoy Weight- This is the weight of the buoy in air.
Flooded Weight- This is the weight of the buoy in air with its hull and pockets flooded.
Buoy Draft- Buoy draft is the distance from the waterline of the buoy to its lowest underwater part, not including mooring.
Freeboard- Freeboard is the distance from the waterline to the top of the hull.
When do you Gas-Free Test a buoy? Be aware that combustible gases could be present in the buoy hull, what do you test with?
Before beginning any work on the buoy, the hull shall be tested for combustible gases using a combustible gas monitor or explosive meter.
what is a Buoy Hull Air Test?
The buoy hull shall hold 3 psi for 10 minutes. Any buoy hull failing the air test shall be repaired and re-tested. Air test procedures and apparatus are described below.
foam buoys?
Also, foam buoys are generally not suitable for rugged environments, and should never be used in ice conditions. Foam buoys are designed to remain on station for eight years with minimal maintenance required.

What are the standard and operational parameters of a daymare? 1st letter is the shape
S – square; T – triangle; J – preferred channel; M – safe water; N – no lateral significance; K – range; and C – crossing.
2nd Letter represents?
the Key color: R – red; G – green; W – white; and B – black.
what does the 3rd letter represent?
the color of stripe: R – red; G – green; W – white; and B – black.
Additional information would be?
I – intracoastal waterway;
SY – yellow square on dayboard (dual purpose); and
TY – yellow triangle on dayboard (dual purpose).
Day-boards shall be expected at least?
bi-annuallyThe dayboard surface and backing materials will deteriorate due to the effects of weathering—wind,
rain, freezing temperatures, and sunlight cause delamination (separation), cracking, peeling, and fading.
Backing Material. Delamination of the plies on a plywood backing should not?
affect more than 25 percent of the surface area.

what are the markings for ICW port and stbd marks?
SQUARE = YELLOW SQ ICW TRIANGEL= YELLOW TRI ICW
There are three marking systems used in the U.S?
General Use; Intercoastal Waterway (ICW); and Western Rivers. All three are based on a Lateral System, wherein marks are used to define the edges of a channel.
Down stream on a river what is dual purpose markings?
GREEN IS TO LAND RED IS TO SEA except down stream river the ICW markings are changed to GREEN SQ ON RED TRIANGLE RED TRIANGE ON GREEN SQ

what manual is used for lighting Criteria?
The Visual Signal Design Manual, COMDTINST M16510.2 (series) describes standard procedures to follow when selecting an optical system for a lighted aid to navigation.
Equipment Inspection. All ATON lighting components should be inspected upon receipt. Electrical components, such as LED lanterns, flashers, lampchangers, and rotating
beacons should be bench tested for ?
24 hours prior to being placed in service.
what are the two Carmanah types?
701-5 and 702-5 and 704-5
What are the battery service life?
battery life is highly dependent on temperature. The
higher the temperature the shorter the expected battery life. Battery recharge intervals life range from 4 years in hot climates to 10 years in cold climates.
Where do you find out how many batteries and solar panels an aid needs?
Solar sizing table and in solar design manual
What is RBDT rated battery discharge time?
expected useful life of a battery in days based on the applied loads and environmental conditions.
Ridges in or ridges out on an RL-14 spread lens?
out
What are the only two characteristics used to mark a wreck?
quick flash, group flashing 2+1
For very long channels, or in areas with poor visibility, the daytime light signals may have to be ?
white, even though the historic color for the nighttime light signals is red or green.
what line number do you as the OIC sign for the APR?
Line 30 B
If discrepancies exist, search other unit storage locations and/or the
unit records (such as, DD-1149 log book) for missing battery.
The primary servicing unit coordinates with district to provide the following documentation if it is apparent an aid has been damaged due to vandalism or allison by a vessel:
♦ Pictures of the damaged aid.
♦ Jump sheets from personnel who serviced the aid.
♦ APR and FID.
♦ Copy of the unit log (cutter only).
♦ Completed computation of charges per reference (cc),
Reimbursable Standard Rates,
