Atoms, Ions and Compounds- 2.1.1 Flashcards
What are the names, charge and structure of the subatomic particles in the atom?
In the atom there are Protons and Electrons both of which have a charge of +1 and -1. There are also Neutrons which have 0 charge. The neutrons and Protons both have a relative mass of 1 and are located in the nucleus. An atom has an overall charge of 0
What does the period indicate about an element?
The number of electrons in its outer shell
What is an Isotope?
An Isotope is an atom of an element that has the same number of Protons and Electrons but a different number of Neutrons
How are isotopes represented?
Oxygen-16
What is an Ion?
An Ion is a charged atom, it has more or less electrons than expected. Positive ions are called cations and negative ions are called anions. Positive ions have less electrons and negative ions have more electrons.
Name 2 properties of Isotopes?
1) Similar chemical properties
2) Same electronic structure
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope compared to the mass of one twelfth of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12
Relative Atomic Mass is…
The average mass of an atom and its isotopes compared to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12
Relative molecular mass is…
The mass of a molecule compared with the mass of one twelfth of an atom of Carbon-12
Give the Name, Relative atomic mass and Relative charge of all the subatomic particles in an atom
Proton 1 +1
Neutron 1 0
Electron 0 -1
How do you calculate Relative Atomic Mass using Relative isotopic abundance?
((Mass of Isotope 1 x Percentage)+(Mass of Isotope 2 x Percentage))/100 = Relative Atomic Mass
