atoms ions and compounds Flashcards
what are the 3 types of subatomic particle
protons neutrons and electrons
how much does an electron weigh
it is negligible but has a mass of 1/1836
where is all of the mass of an atom concentrated
the nucleus
what is a protons charge how about a neutron or an electron
+1,0,-1
do atoms have the same amount of electrons as protons
true
which number is the atomic number of an element on the periodic table
the smaller one
what does the atomic number show
the number of protons in an element
what are isotopes
isotopes are elements with the same number of protons and electrons but differing numbers of neutrons
what are ions
an ion is a charged atom , the number of electrons is different to the number of protons
what are cations
positive ions with fewer electrons then protons
what is an anion
an anion is a negatively charged ion so they have more electrons then protons
what is relative atomic mass
relative atomic mass is the mass of an isotope relative to 1/12 of the mass of carbon-12
what is the relative atomic mass
the relative atomic mass is the weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
how do you work out the relative atomic mass of an element
percentage abundance * mass + percentage abundance * mass //// 100
what do atoms on the left hand side(metals ) of the periodic table do (do they lose/gain electrons )
they lose electrons group1,2,3 all lose electrons (1,2,3) to form cations
