Q

how do you make a positive charged ions

A

In ionic bonding, the atoms involved lose or gain electrons to form positively charged ions. The ions have the electronic structure of a noble gas.

Q

how do you make a negative charged ion

A

you can make a negative charged ion by reacting non-metals with metals, the non-metal atoms gain electrons to achieve the stable electronic structure of a noble gas. Chlorine, for example, has the electronic structure 2,8,7. It is in Group 7 of the periodic table. By gaining a single electron, it gets the stable electronic structure of argon (2,8,8). there is now one more electron than there are positive protons in the nucleus. So the chlorine atom becomes a negatively charged ion.
