Atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures Flashcards
Electron
Negatively charged subatomic particle that exists within shells that orbit the nucleus of an atom
Proton
Positively charged subatomic particle that exists within the nucleus of an atom
Molecule
Two or more atoms that are chemically bonded to each other. The atoms can be the same or different from each other.
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Atom
The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist
Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron
Neutral subatomic particle that exists within the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus
The dense core in the centre of an atom that contains protons and neutrons
Element
A substance made of atoms that all contain the same number of protons and cannot be split into anything simpler
Compound
A pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances (elements and/or compounds) that are not chemically combined
