Atoms,elements, Compounds And Mixtures Flashcards
Wiat is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element that retains the composition of that element.
Define the term Element.
A material that is made up of atoms of only one kind.
Define a compound.
A substance that is formed when two or more different element combine together chemically in a fixed ratio. Examples include water and sodium chloride.
What is a mixture
A physical combination of two or more different substances(element or compounds). The components of a mixture are not the same, and they can be separated by physicalseparation methods.
What is an Elemental molecule
A substance consisting of only one type of element(non-metal) chemically bonded together.
Which is an element?
Gold; water; saltwater solution; air or hydrochloric acid.
Gold
Is Distilled water a compound or a mixture?
It is a compound
Why is sugar a compound and not a mixture?
This is because sugar cannot be separated using physical methods.
What are the 6 separation techniques?
Mechanical sorting Magnet Filtration Evaporation Frictional distillation Chromatography
What instrument can be used to separate liquids of different densities(do not mix)?
A separating funnel.
