Atoms & Elements Flashcards
WHMIS, Physical + Chemical Changes, Physical + Chemical Properties, Mixtures...
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What are 3 things you would find on an SDS sheet (other than the name)?
Composition, Hazardous identification, First-aid measures
Define: Matter, Mass, Volume
Matter is anything that takes up space and can be weighed. Mass is the amount of matter within a given object. Volume is the amount of space occupied by any 3D object.
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
List the following as either matter or not matter: Gravity, copper, oxygen, water, light, heat.
No, yes, yes, yes, no, no.
Explain what the theories, models and laws are in science.
A law is a generalized description of some aspect of the physical world under certain conditions. A theory is a generalized explanation of a set of related observations or events supported by research and good arguments; they are used to explain laws. A model is used to represent and explain observed phenomena.
What is the definition of an atom?
The smallest part of an element that has all of the element’s properties
What are the points of the atomic theory?
- All matter is made up of atoms
- Atoms of an element are alike but different from atoms of other elements
- Atoms can combine to form molecules
- Atoms can’t be destroyed by chemical means
Describe the 3 main particles that make up an atom
Proton (positive, in nucleus, heavy)
Neutron (neutral, in nucleus, heavy)
Electron (negative, outside nucleus, light)
What are Physical and Chemical changes?
- Physical Change: No new substance is produced even though the appearance or state may change
- Chemical Change: A new substance with different properties is produced.
