Atoms/Compounds/Elements Flashcards
Atom comes from the Greek word
‘Atomos’ meaning that which cannot be divided
An element is a substance which
Cannot be broken down into other substances
Sodium and Potassium should be stored
Under oil as they are extremely reactive with water and air
Metals are
Malleable, Lustrous (Shiny), Good conductors of heat and electricity, Usually solid at room temperature except Mercury, Ductile
Non Metals are:
Dull, Poor conductors of heat and electricity, Not ductile, Brittle
What are some metalloids?
Boron, Silicon, Arsenic, Germanium
What is a metalloid
A type of chemical element which has properties in between or that are a mixture of metals and nonmetals.
Elements in the same group of the periodic table:
Have some features in common
Non-metals are on which side of the periodic table?
On the right side
What are some types of Noble Gases?
Neon, Argon, Krypton
The last column of the periodic table contains:
Noble Gases
A compound is
A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together. In mixtures, the substances present are not chemically bonded together.
A particle made up of two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together is called
A molecule
Polymers are
Made up of molecules that are long chains of atoms
Minerals are
Compounds found in the earth formed by non-living things
