Atoms and the Periodic Table Flashcards
How does metallic and non-metallic character change across a period?
As you move to the right of the periodic table, elements go from metallic to non-metallic.
What decides the group number of an element?
The number of electrons in the outer shell of the atom.
What decides the period of an element?
The number of shells its atom has.
What are the relative charges of protons, neutrons and electrons?
Protons - +1
Electrons - -1
Neutrons - 0
What are the relative masses of protons, electrons and neutrons?
Protons - 1
Neutrons - 1
Electrons - 0
What is proton/atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is nucleon/mass number?
The number of protons + neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same elements that have the same number of electrons and protons but a different number of neutrons.
Do isotopes have same physical and chemical properties? Why or why not?
Yes, because they have the same amount of electrons in the outer shell.
What are the two types of isotopes?
Radioactive and non-radioactive.
What is one medical use of a radioisotope?
Lung imaging, treatment of thyroid diseases or used in tracers.
What is one industrial use of a radioisotope?
Locates leaks and measures corrosion.
How many electrons are in a full outer shell? (exclude Hydrogen)
