Atoms and Reactions Flashcards
What is the relative atomic mass of an atom?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with one twelfth the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
What is the relative atomic mass of an atom?
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with one twelfth the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
What is the relative atomic mass of an atom?
The average mass of a molecule compared with one twelfth the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
What is an empirical formula?
The smallest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
What is a molecular formula?
A formula showing the numbers and types of atoms of each atom in a compound.
What is the molar gas volume?
The volume per mole of a gas. At RTP, the molar gas volume is approximately 24dm3/mol
What is an acid?
A chemical that is a proton donar and releases H+ ions in solution.
What is an alkali?
A chemical that reacts with an acid and releases OH- ions in solution.
What is a base?
A chemical that reacts with an acid and is a proton acceptor.
What is the difference between a hydrated and an anhydrous salt?
Hydrated is the crystalline form containing water and anhydrous has no water.
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons, gain of hydrogen, loss of oxygen and a decrease in oxidation number.
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons, loss of hydrogen, gain of oxygen or an increase in oxidation number.
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction in which both reduction and oxidation takes place.
