ATOMS AND MOLECULES Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element that consists of a nucleus that contains the protons and neutrons and is surrounded by electrons in the out shells.
What is a molecule?
A group of 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together.
What is the mass of a
Proton
Neutron
Electron
- 1.
1/1840 OR 0 as it weights virtually nothing.
What is the charge of a:
Proton
Neutron
Electron
+1
0 (Neutral)
-1
What is an ISOTOPE?
An atom that contains the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
NB : They have the same atomic number (protons) but a different mass number.
As an isotope has a different number of protons and neutrons how do you work out the Atomic Mass?
A. work out the how many protons and neutrons there are in each isotope. and
B. then multiply each number by the % of the sample.
C. At the numbers together and divide by 100!!
