Atoms and Ions GLOSSARY Flashcards
Objective: To memorise words and terms relating to atoms and ions.
define ‘atom’
the smallest structure of an element which retains the chemical properties of the element.
define ‘matter’
everything that has mass and occupies space. Everything in the universe is made up of matter.
define ‘chemistry’
he study of matter and the changes that take place with that matter
define ‘nucleus’
the place where most of the mass of an atom is held. contains protons and neutrons.
define ‘proton’
a positively charged subatomic particle. found in the nucleus. determines the atomic number.
define ‘electron’
a negatively charged subatomic particle. orbits the atoms nucleus. always shares the same number as the protons in the element.
define ‘electron shell’
define ‘neutron’
subatomic particles found in an atom nucleus with no charge.
define ‘element’
a substance that contains only one kind of atom.
define ‘molecule’
two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together.
define ‘compound’
two or more DIFFERENT atoms that are chemically bonded together.
define ‘mixture’
different elements or compounds physically put together.
define ‘atomic number’
the number of protons in an element. this number defines the element.
define ‘mass number/atomic mass’
total number of particles in the nucleus.
define ‘atomic weight’
average mass of an atom of an element.
