Atoms and Elements Flashcards
What is the chemical symbol of an element?
The first one or two letters of it’s english or latin name.
What unit is used to measure the mass of an atom?
Atomic mass units, or AMU.
Relationship between grams and AMUs.
1 amu = 1.66*10^-24 grams
aka VERY SMALL.
Define: Physical Constant
A quantity in nature that never changes
An example of a physical constant is Planck’s Constant.
What is one way to think of light?
As a wave.
Equation for determining frequency.
f = c/λ
where f=frequency, c= the speed of light, and λ= wavelength.
What is the speed of light through air?
3.00*10^8 m/sec
What is the metric unit for frequency? HINT: look at the equation for frequency.
1/sec, or Hertz.
Describe the relationship between frequency and wavelength.
They are Inversely Proportional. That means that the higher the frequency, the smaller the wavelength, and vice versa.
Equation for the amount of energy in light.
E = h*f
h=plancks constant, which is 6.6310^-34 Jsec
f = frequency
Describe the relationship between energy and frequency.
They are Directly proportional, meaning the more energy, the higher the frequency, and vice versa.
Define: Ground State
Lowest energy state of a particle
Define: Spectroscopy
The method of identifying chemicals by studying the light they emit or absorb
