Atomic Models, Energy, and Orbitals Flashcards
Define: Wave-particle duality
The concept that light, as well as electrons and many other subatomic particles have the properties of both particles AND waves.
Define: Aufbau Principle
Electrons fill orbitals starting with the lowest energy ones and then filling higher energy orbitals as needed
Define: Valence electrons
An atom’s outermost electrons
Define: Ion
An atom or group of atoms that develop an electrical charge by gaining or losing electrons
Define: Ionic compound
Compound in which the elements that make it up gain net charges by gaining or losing electrons
Define:Electrolysis
Breaking down a chemical using electricity
Define: Electrolytes
Chemicals that form a conductive solution when dissolved
The current leading model for an atom is the…
Quantum Mechanical Model.
What is constructive interference?
When two waves interfere, or overlap, they are facing the same direction, so they combine together to make one bigger wave.
What is destructive interference?
When two waves interfere, or overlap, they are facing in opposite directions, so their crests and troughs “cancel out” and destroy both waves.
