Atoms and atomic structure Flashcards
What is a compound?
Contain 2 or more different elements chemically joined in fixed proportions
What is a mixture?
There is 2 different elements or compounds but not chemically combined
How would you separate a compound?
using a chemical reaction
How would you separate a mixture?
using physical separation eg filtration, distillation, crystallisation or chromatography
What are atoms made up of?
Protons neutrons and electrons
How are protons, neutrons and electrons charged?
Protons - positively (1)
electrons - negatively (-1)
neutrons - no charge (0)
What charge does the nucleus have?
Overall positive charge
Which number is the mass number and which number is the atomic number?
Mass number is the top number
Atomic number is the bottoms number
How do we calculate the protons, electrons and nuetrons?
protons (and electrons) is the bottom number (atomic number)
nuetrons is the top number (mass) takeaway the bottom number (atomic)
What is an isotope?
atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
What is an Ion?
atoms which have an overall charge beacuse they have lost or gained electrons
How do we tell if an ion has lost or gained electrons?
Positive ions have lost electrons
Negative ions have gained electrons
What does abundance mean?
how common each isotope is
Formula for relative atomic mass
sum of isotope abundance X isotope mass number / 100
