Allotropes Flashcards
What is an allotrope?
different forms of the same element in the same physical state but bonded differently
What is a fullerene?
molecules of carbon atoms with hollow shapes
Properties of fullerenes
have hollow shape including tubes, balls and cages
can be used to deliver drugs as hollow
can be used as lubricants
What is graphene?
a single atom thick layer of graphite with strong covalent bonds between each atom
Properties of graphene
atoms are arranged in hexagons
is very strong
good thermal and electrical conductor
nearly transparent
What are polymers?
large molecules made up of repeating units called monomers
Properties of polymers
the intermolecular forces between the large polymer molecules are strong
polymers are a solid at room temp
cheap and strong so used to make plastic bottles and bags
