ATOMS Flashcards
What particles make up an atom?
Neutrons, Protons & Electrons
What particles make up the Nucleus?
Neutrons & Protons
Where are the electrons kept?
On the outer rings
What makes an atom neutral/uncharged?
When there is an equal amount of Protons to Electrons
What is the Atomic number?
the atomic number it located in the top corner and it represents the amount of protons in that element
What is the max capacity of electrons per shell?
2, 8, 8
What are the electrons on the outer shell called?
Valence electrons
When an atom loses or gains an electron it becomes an ?
Ion
When an Atom loses an electron it becomes a?
+Ion/ Cation
When an Atom gains an electron it becomes a?
-Ion/ Anion
What is an unreactive species?
An unreactive species is in an atom that has the electron configuration of a noble gas because their atoms hold their quota of electrons.
What is a reactive species?
A reactive species is an atom that does not hold the electron configuration as a noble gas. it will tend to react in order to achieve this by loosing, gaining or sharing electrons to form chemical bonds.
what is a Cation?
A cation is a positively charged ion, with fewer electrons than protons.
what is an Anion?
an anion is negatively charged, with more electrons than protons.
