Atoms Flashcards
Atomic Number
on an element of the periodic table, the first number at the top, it shows number of protons
Atomic Mass
on an element of the periodic table, the last number at the bottom, it shows number of protons and neutrons
Atom
the original number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom
Isotope
the original number of protons and electrons but either more or less neutrons
Cation
the original number of protons and neutrons but less electrons make the charge of the atom postive
Anion
the original number of protons and neutrons but more electrons making the charge of the atom negative
Proton
particle of an atom that has a positive charge (found in the nucleus of an atom)
Neutron
particle of an atom that has no charge (neutral) (found in nucleus of an atom)
Electron
particle of an atom that has a negative charge (orbits the nucleus of an atom)
Isotope Notation
in isotope notation the order of the atomic number and the atomic mass gets switched around (atomic number is the bottom number and atomic mass is the top number)
What is the identity of an atom determined by?
Number of protons
What are the particles inside the nucleus called?
Protons and Neutrons
What is the number of protons and neutrons combined called?
Atomic Mass
In large atoms the number of ____ is less than the number of ____
protons and neutrons
What is another name for the number of protons?
Atomic number
Isotopes have the same number of ____ but a different number of ____
protons and neutrons
