Atoms Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
protons and neutrons.
How do you work out the number of neutrons?
Mass number,A - Atomic number,Z
What are isotopes?
Isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
Isotopes have the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons.
Why are isotopes chemically identical?
They are chemically identical because they have the same number of electrons.
What is the relative mass and charge of an electron?
Relative mass = 1/1836 and the relative charge is -1.
What is the relative mass and charge of a proton?
Relative mass = 1 and the relative charge is +1.
What is the relative mass and charge of a neutron?
Relative mass = 1 and the charge is 0.
Why do isotopes have different physical properties?
This is because they have different masses e.g.
Cl 37 has:
slower rate of diffusion, A higher density, A higher mass, A higher melting and boiling point.
