Atoms Flashcards
atoms
An atom is the smallest piece of matter. It’s made up of a center called the nucleus, with tiny particles called electrons buzzing around it.
Nucleus
Central part of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
Electron Shells:
Regions surrounding the nucleus where electrons are found, organised into different energy levels.
Imagine the electrons as planets orbiting around the nucleus like in a solar system. These orbits are called electron shells, and they have different energy levels
Atomic Number
The number of protons an atom has.
The atomic number tells you the number of protons in the nucleus. It’s like the atom’s ID number. It helps identify what type of element the atom is.
Mass Number
The number of PROTONS plus NEUTRONS in the nucleus.
The mass number is the total number of particles in the nucleus
Protons
Protons are positively charged particles found in the nucleus
Neutrons
Neutrons are neutral particles also located in the nucleus.
Electrons
Electrons are negatively charged and zoom around the nucleus in electron shells.
Neutral Atom:
When an atom has an equal number of protons and electrons, it’s called a neutral atom. This means its overall charge is neutral.
Calculating Protons, Neutrons, Electrons:
- To find the number of protons, look at the atomic number.
- To calculate the number of neutrons, subtract the atomic number from the mass number.
- For a neutral atom, the number of electrons is the same as the number of protons.
