atoms Flashcards
atoms what do they contain
protons neutrons and electrons
electrons what do they do
move around the nucleus in electron shells
negatively charged
they almost have no mass
nucleus where are they and what do they do
middle of atom contains protons and neutrons
nucleus has radius of around 1 times 10 to the power of minus fourteen
has positive charge becuase of protons
almost whole of the mass is the nucleus
relative charge and mass for the particles
protons mass = 1 but charge =+1
neutron mass= 1 nut charge = 0
electrons mass is very small and its charge =-1
atomic number and mass number
atomic number=number of protons
mass number=number of protons + number of neutrons
number of neutrons = mass number-atomic number
electrons charges
its the same size for charge on the protons but opposite so they cancel out
however if an ion the number of protons does not have an equal number of electrons meaning they have an overall charge
for example an ion with a charge of -2 has two more electrons than protons
positive ion =numberoff electrons=atomic number-charge
negative ion = number of electron = atomic number+charge
