Atomic Theory Flashcards
0
Q
Main points of Dalton’s theory
A
- all elements are made up of atoms
- all atoms of an element are the same
- atoms of different elements can be identified by their atomic weights
- atoms can combine in fixed ratios to form compounds
- atoms can’t be created, altered or destroyed as they are the smallest particle of matter
1
Q
John Dalton
A
- based on the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions.
- proposed elements are made of the atom (sphere)
2
Q
J. J. Thomson
A
Conducted experiments using cathode ray tubes (CRT)
- discovers the electron
- missed the mark on the charge (which Millikan later corrected)
3
Q
Robert Millikan
A
Determined the mass and charge of an electron (through famous oil drop experiment)
5
Q
Rutherford
A
- performed the Gold Foil experiment
- figured out that their were holes (empty space) in each atom
- modified Thomsons model based on his findings: the atom is mainly empty space but has a sense inner core called the nucleus
6
Q
Story so far - types of models and who
A
Dalton (sphere)
Thomson (rasin bun)
Rutherford (planetary)
8
Q
Thomson’s model of the atom
A
Plum pudding model/ rasin bun
