Atomic Theory Flashcards

Q

Main points of Dalton’s theory

A
  • all elements are made up of atoms
  • all atoms of an element are the same
  • atoms of different elements can be identified by their atomic weights
  • atoms can combine in fixed ratios to form compounds
  • atoms can’t be created, altered or destroyed as they are the smallest particle of matter

Q

John Dalton

A
  • based on the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions.
  • proposed elements are made of the atom (sphere)

Q

J. J. Thomson

A

Conducted experiments using cathode ray tubes (CRT)

  • discovers the electron
  • missed the mark on the charge (which Millikan later corrected)

Q

Rutherford

A
  • performed the Gold Foil experiment
  • figured out that their were holes (empty space) in each atom
  • modified Thomsons model based on his findings: the atom is mainly empty space but has a sense inner core called the nucleus
