Atomic Structures Flashcards
Atom
A particle that can’t be broken down into smaller particles
Molecule
Two or more atoms chemically joined together ( can be identical atoms or different ones)
Element
made up of only one kind of atom
Compound
Made up of at least two different atoms chemically bonded together
Mixture
Made up of elements, compounds of both that are separated as the different substances are not bonded together
Nucleus
Has the most mass of the atom. Located in the center. Made of neutrons and protons
Protons
Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom. They have a positive charge (+1) and have the same mass as a neutron. It has a mass of 1
Neutrons
It is in the nucleus, has a neutral charge (0). A mass of 1
Electrons
In shells around the nucleus. A negative charge ( -1) and a mass of 1/1836. Are in constant motions within their orbit
Electron configuration
Electrons fill the shells from the nearest to the nucleus, out. Each shell has a limited number of electrons. First shell - 2 electrons. Second 8, Third 8
The more shells, the more energy
Isotope
Atoms of the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Groups
Vertical columns. Elements in each group have similar characteristics. Group number matches the number of electrons
Period
Horizontal rows. The period number matches the number of shells
Ions
a positively or negatively charged particle(atom). Atoms lose or gain electrons so that they have a full outer shell
