4a Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
A substance that contains hydrogen and carbon ONLY.
Empirical Formula
The simplest ratio of atoms in a compound: NaCl, Al2O3…
Molecular Formula
The actual number of atoms in a molecule: H2O…
Structural Formula
The arrangement of atoms in a molecule (doesn’t show all the bonds)
Displayed Formula
Shows all the bonds and the arrangement of atoms
General Formula
The trend/ratio of atoms in a homologous series
Homologous series
A group of chemical with:
-The same general formula (only differing by the number of CH2 units)
-Show a trend in physical properties
-Similar chemical reactions
Functional Group
Parts of an organic molecule that determines its reactions
Isomer
Molecule that has the same molucular formula but different structure
Compound prefixes
- Meth-
- Eth-
- Prop-
- But-
- Pent-
- Hex-
Substitution
A hydrogen atom is replaced with another atom. UV light is needed to break the bond.
Complete combustion
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon Dioxide + Water
Incomplete Combustion
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon Monoxide + Water
or
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon + Water
Addition
More atoms can be added because the compuound in unsaturated (contains a double bond).
Alkenes can undergo addition because they are unsaturated compounds.
