Atomic Structure-ionic Flashcards
What does chemical bonding involve?
Transferring or sharing electrons in the highest occupied shell (in order to achieve the electronic structure of a noble gas)
How are ions formed?
Electrons are lost or gained to complete a full outer shell
What becomes positively/negatively charged?
Positive = atoms that lose electrons. Negative = atoms that gain electrons
What do ions have the same electronic structure as?
Noble gas
What are the elements in group 1 of the periodic table?
Alkali metals
What do alkali metals react with to form?
Non-metal elements to form ionic compounds in which the metal ion had a single positive charge
What are the elements in group 7?
The halogens
What do halogens react with to form?
Alkali metals to form ionic compounds in which the halide ions have a single negative charge
What is an ionic compound?
A giant structure of ions
What happens when ionic compounds melt or dissolve in water? Why does this happen?
They conduct electricity because the ions are free to move and carry the current.
What are ionic compounds held together by?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is a compound?
A substance in which atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined
