2
Q

what is an ion?

A

Ions are formed when atoms loose/gain electrons, to obtain full outer shell of electrons, to have the most stable electronic configuration

4
Q

what is the result of different number of protons and electrons?

A

the atom has a +/- charge, if it’s lost electrons then positive, it it gains then negative

9
Q

if chlorine has an atomic mass of 35 75% of the time, and 37 25% of the time, what is the relative atomic mass(RAM)

A

(75x35)+(25x37) / (75+25) = 35.5

13
Q

What does the group number tell you about the atom?

A

The number of electrons on outer shell is correlated to the group number (eg. group 7 elements have 7 electrons on their outer shell)

16
Q

When are ionic compounds formed?

A

when metals and non-metals react

17
Q

How do you name and ionic compound?

A

Metal then non-metal, and ending in -ide. (eg. Lead + Oxygen –> Lead Oxide)

18
Q

What if both element are non-metals?

A

The element on the left hand side of the periodic table is named first.

19
Q

What if the ionic compound contains 1 metal, but both a non-metal and oxygen?

A

then the ionic compound ends with -ate, to represent the oxygen. (eg. Copper + Sulfur + Oxygen –>Copper sulfATE)
