Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table Flashcards
Where is the nucleus, what does it contain and what is its charge?
The nucleus is in the centre of the cell, it contains proteins and neutrons and it has a positive charge.
What did Rutherford discover?
The nucleus and protons
What did Chadwick discover?
Neutrons
What did Bohr discover?
The current nuclear model
What did Newland do?
He grouped things into octaves and order by patterns and arranged by mass
What did Mendeleev do?
He arranged by mass but left gaps in his periodic table to predict the properties of undiscovered elements
Properties of noble gases
Have a full outer shell
Unreactive because they don’t gain or lose electrons
Properties of halogens
Diatomic
Highly reactive
Reactivity decreases as you go down the group
The boiling points increases as you go down the group
React violently with Group 1 elements
Properties of alkali metals
Reacts with water metal + water —> metal hydroxide that’s an exothermic reaction - releases lots of hydrogen gas (which causes fizzing) Reactivity increases as you go down Booking points decreases as you go down
Properties of transition metals
Hard
Shiny
Conductors
