? look at page 115
Who developed periodic table
Mendeleev made it needing best way to show 63 elements
periodic table
arranges elements in columns based of properties that repeat from row to row.
Periods
each row in the table of elements is a period.
the number of elelments per period depends on the orbitals for each element.
Groups
Each column on the table is a group - atomic numbers are used to arrange elements into groups.
Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals and
metalloids
Metals are
good conductors of electric current and heat.
nonmetals
elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current
metalloids
elements with properties that fall between those of metals and nonmetals.
Group 1A are alkali metals
reactivity for theses increases from top to bottom
GROUP 2A are alkaline earth metals
harder than metals in group 1A they react with water
Group 3A is aLUMINUM
it is a good conductor of electric current - strong and light weight
Group 4A
nonmental - carbon - reactions we have in our body cells
Group 5A
Nitrogen family
Group 6A
Oxygen family - the element we have most in Earth’s crust
Group 8A
noble gases - colorless and odorless not reactive!!!!!
chemical bond
force that holds atoms or ions together
ionic bond
force that forms when electrons are transformed from one atom to another
ionic compound
has a strong attraction among ions within a crystal lattice
covalent bond
is a chemical bond where 2 atoms share a pair of balence electrons
