Atomic structure and function Flashcards
Electrons
An electron is a negatively charged subatomic particle that can be either bound to an atom or free (not bound). It forms a chemical bond with other atoms.
protons
Protons are positvley subatomic particles located in the nucleus.
- The number of protons is the identity of the atom.
Neutron
Neutrons
Neutrons are subatomic particles located in the nucleus.
- And adds mass and atomic stability to the atom.
Electron cloud
An electron cloud is the location of the electrons.
- the order and placement of electrons in the electron cloud determines how the atom will react to other atoms and what types of bonds are can be formed.
Nucleus
-The nucleus is the center of the atom where the protons and neutrons are located.
- contains almost all of the mass of the atom.
Iconic bond
-An iconic bond are chemical bonds formed by transferring for electrons from one atom to another,
-forming an anion ( a negatively charged atom as electrons are gained) and a cation ( a positively charged atom as electrons are lost)
Covalent bond
-A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons .
-one electron from each atom to form one bond .
Polar bond
-A polar bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms unevenly share two or more electrons .to form one bond
Non-polar bond
-A non- polar bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms evenly share two or more electrons .
- one electron from each atom to form one bond.
Hydrogen bond
-A hydrogen bond is a weak bond
-between two molecules resulting from an attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other.
