Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. The number of protons equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom
Mass number
The sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Number of neutrons
Mass number - Atomic number
Isotope
Atoms of the same element with the same atomic number, but different mass numbers
Isotope properties
Same chemical properties, different physical properties
5 stages of the mass spectrometer
vaporization, ionization, acceleration, deflection, detection
Relative atomic mass
The ratio of the average mass of one atom of an element to one-twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Calculate Relative atomic mass
Ar = (Ir × %)/100

First ionization energy
The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms.
Representation of ionization energy
X(g) → X+ + e-
