Atomic Structure Flashcards
Nucleus
A nucleus is the positively charged center of and atom consisting of protons and neutrons.
Properties of protons
Protons are a type of subatomic particle with a postive charge
Properties of neutrons
Neutrons have no electric charge
2000 times the mass of an electron
Properties of electrons
Involved in chemical reactions with other atoms
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
Isotopes
Each of two more forms of the same element that contains equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei
Group number
The number above each element to show the groups that the elements are in
Period number
The number that is given to a group of elements across the periodic table that have made a round from completing its outer electron shell
Electron arrangement
Electrons are arranged in shells around an atom’s nucleus. Electrons closest to the nucleus will have the lowest energy
